I am a writer, editor, and teacher with twenty-four years of experience teaching at universities in the U.S. and Canada and an extensive record of publications in print and online.
I am a contributing editor for Poets & Writers Magazine, a book critic for The Globe and Mail, and a staff writer for the literary website The Millions. My work has also appeared in The New York Times, The National Post, The Economist, Salon, The Georgia Straight, The Baltimore Sun, and many other publications. My short fiction has appeared in Tin House, The Common, The Southampton Review, December, The Cortland Review, River City, The Orange Coast Review, The Oakland Review, and other journals. My short story "Stories Are Like Water" was nominated for a Pushcart Prize.
I teach courses in writing and literary studies at the University of British Columbia, British Columbia Institute of Technology, and Simon Fraser University, all in Vancouver, Canada, where I live with my wife and son. Before moving to Canada, I taught at Fordham University, American University, University of Richmond, and San Francisco State University. I am a U.S. citizen and a Permanent Resident of Canada.
